After a Couchbase virtual database (VDB) is provisioned, Data Control Tower (DCT) provides a full set of lifecycle management operations. These operations control availability, data state, policies, and infrastructure placement of VDBs.
Available VDB operations
-
Start / Stop – Control whether cluster processes are running
-
Enable / Disable – Control VDB availability and resource allocation
-
Refresh – Restore VDB to a different snapshot
-
Rename – Change VDB display name
-
Delete – Permanently remove VDB
View Couchbase VDB details
Access the VDB detail page to view status, configuration, and all available operations.
Steps
-
Do one of the following:
-
From the Home page, locate the VDB under Datasets and select View.
-
Navigate to Data > Data Management > VDBs, then select View for the target VDB.
-
Result
The VDB detail page opens showing status, configuration, snapshots, and available operations.
Stop and start Couchbase VDBs
Stopping and starting a VDB controls whether the database processes are running on the target host. Use this to manage resource usage or perform maintenance.
Steps
-
Navigate to Data > Data Management > VDBs, then select View for the target VDB.
-
To stop: Select Actions > Stop, then confirm.
-
To start: Select Actions > Start, then confirm.
Result
The VDB cluster is stopped or started as requested. When stopped, the cluster is offline but data and configuration are preserved.
Disable and enable Couchbase VDBs
Disabling a VDB unmounts its storage and releases host resources without deleting the VDB. Enabling restores access and mounts storage again.
Steps
-
Navigate to Data > Data Management > VDBs, then select View for the target VDB.
-
To disable, select Actions > Disable.
-
(Optional) On the Disable screen, select the Attempt Cleanup check box to specify whether the system should attempt to disable the database and clean up its related resources in the environment before removing the mount point.
-
Click Disable.
-
To enable, select Actions > Enable.
-
Click Enable.
Result
The VDB is disabled or enabled as requested. Disabled VDBs release resources but can be re-enabled without re-provisioning.
Refresh a Couchbase VDB
Refreshing a VDB restores it to a different snapshot or bookmark while preserving the existing state as an alternate timeline.
Steps
-
Navigate to Data > Data Management > VDBs, then select View for the target VDB.
-
Select Refresh or Actions > Refresh.
-
Select the snapshot or bookmark to refresh to.
-
Review the summary and select Submit.
Result
The VDB is refreshed to the selected snapshot. Data from the snapshot point is restored.
Rename a Couchbase VDB
Change the VDB display name without affecting configuration or data.
Steps
-
Navigate to Data > Data Management > VDBs, then select View for the target VDB.
-
Select Actions > Rename.
-
Enter the new name and select Submit.
Result
The VDB display name is updated. All references are updated automatically in DCT.
Delete a Couchbase VDB
Deleting a VDB permanently removes it and all associated snapshots. This operation cannot be undone.
Steps
-
Navigate to Data > Data Management > VDBs, then select View for the target VDB.
-
Select Actions > Delete.
-
Optionally, select Force Delete to remove data at the operating system level.
-
Select Delete to confirm.
Result
The VDB is deleted from DCT and the target host. Storage is released.
Troubleshooting VDB operations
If VDB operations fail or show unexpected behavior:
-
Check Couchbase instance logs at
/opt/couchbase/var/lib/couchbase/logson target host -
Verify SSH connectivity to target environment
-
Confirm target cluster is running and accessible on configured port (default 8091)
-
Review Continuous Data Engine logs for detailed error messages
