Refer to the Upgrade matrix before upgrading. Review the release notes and version-specific documentation for your source version, target version, and every intermediate version you upgrade through for prerequisites and conditions.
For upgrades from version 6.0.0.0 or later to a compatible version, contacting Delphix Support is not required.
Upgrade images for target versions 6.0.2.0 and later include upgrade pre-checks. Use the latest target-version image because checks may be updated between releases.
Upgrades from version 2025.3.0.* or older to version 2025.4.0.* or newer require an Upgrade and Reboot and VDB downtime.
Schedule downtime
Use the Upgrade matrix to determine whether the target upgrade requires a reboot and VDB downtime. Review the Fixed issues section in the release notes for the target version to identify fixes marked Reboot Required. For DCT appliance upgrades, also review the Fixed issues section of the target DCT version's release notes to identify fixes that require a reboot before choosing the upgrade type. When the matrix lists reboot as optional, Upgrade Only is recommended unless Delphix Support instructs you to reboot to receive a specific fix or you know your configuration requires one.
If you select Upgrade Only, the engine does not reboot during the software upgrade, so VDB availability is not affected during this phase. If a Reboot Required fix applies, schedule downtime before running Finalize Upgrade. Finalize Upgrade stops running jobs and temporarily pauses VDBs and dSource updates.
If the Upgrade matrix requires a reboot, select Upgrade and Reboot and schedule downtime for your VDB applications. The Delphix Engine disables VDBs and dSources for the reboot. Downtime is proportional to the number of VDBs.
Any Continuous Data, Continuous Compliance, or DCT jobs running when the engine upgrade starts are canceled. Long-running jobs, including replication and SnapSync, are also canceled. Check the associated product documentation to determine whether a job supports resumption and whether it restarts automatically. A resumable job can continue from its previous progress when restarted; resumable does not mean that it restarts automatically. After the upgrade, check whether canceled jobs have restarted automatically. Manually restart only jobs that have not restarted, following the associated product documentation. Treat any job type not documented as resumable as nonresumable; you must restart it from the beginning. Continuous Compliance jobs do not resume after the upgrade, and Continuous Compliance services are unavailable during the upgrade. DCT jobs are canceled, and DCT services are unavailable for the duration of the engine upgrade.
Download the upgrade image for the target version from the Delphix download site.
Upgrade image sizes vary by release. The 2026.5.0.2 image is approximately 9 GB. Check the target image size and use a fast internet connection to download and upload it to the Delphix Engine.
The upgrade image should be downloaded or moved to a location accessible to the computer used for navigating the Delphix Management application.
Delphix Engines can only perform replication to engines on the same or higher version. Upgrading a replication source without upgrading its replication targets could cause replication between those peers to fail.
Verify the integrity of your downloaded OVAs or upgrade images
SHA256 checksums confirm that files you download from download.delphix.com have not changed due to a faulty transfer, disk error, or other corruption.
Calculate the checksum with the appropriate command for your system, then compare it to the value in the SHA256SUMS (or .md5sum) file on the download site.
Windows
Powershell
Get-FileHash .\upgrade-image.tar -Algorithm SHA256
CertUtil
certutil -HashFile <upgrade-image.tar> SHA256
Linux
With coreutils installed:
sha256sum upgrade-image.tar
macOS or Unix (with Perl installed)
shasum -a 256 upgrade-image.tar
If the checksum matches the value on the Delphix download portal, the file is intact and safe to use. If it doesn’t match, re-download the file and verify again before proceeding with the upgrade.
For more information, read Validating SHA256 Checksum of OVAs and Upgrade Images (KBA).
Verify connectivity to datasets and environments
As part of an upgrade, the Delphix Engine must connect to the environments that contain datasets and must have credentials to access datasets or applications. Configure the environments to allow script execution.
If an environment, dataset, or application is unreachable or misconfigured, the upgrade may encounter errors while it tries to quiesce VDBs. It may not be able to restart affected datasets after applying the upgrade.
If an error pauses the upgrade, a banner appears on the Upgrade screen. The report lists datasets that could not be quiesced and may be unavailable after the upgrade. Review the report and take the suggested corrective actions before continuing.
If you know that a dataset is unavailable, for example because its host is unreachable or the server is down, disable the dataset. Use Force Disable if necessary.
Environments, datasets, or applications that cannot be quiesced may not refresh or re-enable correctly after the reboot.
